LAURA PHILLIPS Opinions Editor In celebration of both So cial Work and Women’s History Month, on March 21 Methodist College’s Social Work Department and Social Work Club invited guest speaker Mary Lynn Bryan to speak on her research of the life and work of Jane Addams. Many know the historical Jane Addams as being one of America’s most prolific writers and for her international contributions toward social work efforts. One of Addams most notable contributions was the establish ment of the Hull-House in 1889. Bryan, who earned her bachelor of history degree from Alabama’s Polytechnic Institute which is now Auburn University, her Masters from the University of Illinois and her MBA from the University of Chicago, has devoted much of her career to share her extensive knowledge of Jane Ad dams. Serving as Director of the Manuscripts Collection and curator of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum for the University of Chi cago and as the Editor of the Jane Addams Papers for the Department of History at Duke University, Bry an’s criteria on Addams is highly admirable. A Fayetteville resident for over 20 years, Bryan also has a history here at Methodist College. She is a member of the Methodist College Board of Trustee’s and has received an honorary doctorate of letters from Methodist College in 1988. According to Lyn Green, the SWK Club Advisor and Field Coordinator who helped organize the event stated that “The turnout for the lecture was outstanding.” Clark Hall Auditorium was packed full of about 75-80 students and faculty that warmly welcomed this outstanding scholar. Focusing on what was mostly unknown about the life of Addams such as her personal family life; Bryan kept the guests intrigued by her educational yet insightftjlly entertaining lecture. According to Green, students and faculty even remained at least half an hour after the lecture was over to ask more questions and find more insight on. the life of Addams. The Jane Addams lecture was not the only thing the SWK club planned for Social Work Month. The club has also been involved in several service projects for the community such as pack ing necessity boxes for military in Iraq, hygiene articles for homeless people and initiating a food pantry located at Pine Forest. They also took part by giving a check to the Cumberland County Department of Social Services, Adult Discre tionary Fund for the aid of the elderly and disabled.
